Climbing in Chamonix

Some pretty pictures here only about one trip to Chamonix in which we've climbed Mont Blanc du Tacul, a very beautiful wall near Mont Blanc, with a summit at 4248 meters. Chamonix is really a paradise for mountain lovers. Also a very important city in terms of the history of mountaineering. The starting point of what we know now as modern mountaineering. A place where grand alpinism grows, where great mountaineers lived and live. Also the cheapest place on earth I have found for mountain equipment! Just browse the pictures and start dreaming...

The picture at left shows the wall with two tiny climbers at the bottom. The route follows to the right, almost exactly where the shadow ends,  until the ridge and then goes left to the summit. Inclination reaches 70 degrees and there is a small step with mixed (rock and ice) climbing just before the summit. Many loosen rocks... dangerous! If you intend to climb Mont Blanc from Aiguille du Midi you don't need to go to the summit, but only through the ridge. Wake up early (~ 01:00 am) for there is still Mont Maudit in the middle... and the melting ice after noon is awful, really tiring. It will take you 8 hours to reach Mont Blanc in a good pace.
A view from within our tent early in the morning.
Rock climbing is not only possible but amazing! Here at Aiguille du Midi. Try to find two small and black points... they are climbers!
A close-up, yes, here they are, so one can see the two brave climbers!
Climbing the wall. The inclination appears small and easy at the picture. But, believe me, we have had several moments with a lot of adrenaline, specially because there is a lot of crevasses... ice bridges over deep crevasses... Note the dark deep sky...
One can see in this picture that even a not so complicated climb can be extremely dangerous. Here the necessity of climbing roped is obvious. If one can not stop a fall, the chances of dying are quite large. Yes, the small dot at the up right is a climber!
A great view from the summit. Chamonix down there with Aiguille du Midi standing high beside.
Amazing! Matterhorn seen from approximately 70 kilometers. What a beautiful mountain range... all the mountains I have read from historical books... Grandes Jorasses, Aiguille d'Argentières, Aiguille du Dru, Aiguille Verte etc. etc. etc. How I remembered Lionel Terray and les conquérants de l'inutile!
At lower right the longest glacier in the Mont Blanc group, Mèr de Glace. We will always be willing to come back!
