Mountaineering

Here you have a brief description of what has been my mountaineering experience since 1988. Hopefully, this is going to be updated quite often, as long as my work allows! At the end, there are some links to follow, if you are willing to have more details on my trips and expeditions, or wish to have a look at some pretty pictures.

I started my activities on mountains in 1988 when I became
an associate to the Clube Alpino Paulista (CAP), the only
alpine club in Brazil, where most of the Brazilians who
do snow and ice climbing are, and the only club in Brazil
which gives courses on snow and ice climbing and high
altitude mountaineering.

Cuscuzeiro, Analāndia - SPSince then I have made several rock climbing trips to many places
in Brazil, including Pedra do Baú, Pedralva, São Bento do Sapucaí,
Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro,
Analândia, Atibaia, Bragança Paulista etc. More recently, I have
climbed also in the Italian Dolomites, the German Frankenjura
and the Austrian and Bavarian Alps.

Manga com Leite - CuscuzeiroSince 1995 I also have made several ice
climbing trips, as well as snow and ice
and high mountain expeditions,
including Cerro Tronador and Cerro
Aconcágua, in Argentina, Illimani
and Illampu, in Bolivia and Peru,
Torres del Paine, in Chile,
Grossvenediger, in Austria, and
Mont Blanc du Tacul, in France.

Fjord near Cerro GaviotaPerhaps the most interesting expedition I had ever
participated in was the I Expedição Brasileira à Patagônia
Ocidental, sponsored by Lexmark. The members of this
CAP expedition explored an area in the south of Chile
that was then untouched by the human being. In this trip,
a route to Cerro Gaviota still unclimbed summit was
identified, and two virgin mountains were climbed and
named, one of them after Domingos Giobbi, the founder of
CAP.

Climbing Cerro Domingos GiobbiA detailed account of this trip can be found here.
Another one here. A note in the American
Alpine Journal documents this expedition.
Surely, we must come back there to finish
the climb to summit Cerro Gaviota.
As far as we know, nobody has been there
after us, as well...

Climbing in AntarcticaIn December 3, 1999, I started one of the most splendid trips I have ever
done: Antarctica. Brazil has an Antarctic Research Program (ProAntar),
and thus an Antarctic station, located in the Admiralty Bay, King George
island, in the South Shetlands islands. For specialized support and safety
issues, ProAntar sends mountaineers each summer, and in that summer I
was selected to go. I spent 50 days there and made several reports that can
be reached in Antártica On-Line.
