Compact groups in the DPOSS II survey
|
The survey has been extracted from the DPOSS II digitized plates, with an automatic algorithm,
employing the following criteria:
Richness: n ≥ 4, where n is the number of galaxies within 2 mag of the brightest group member;
Isolation: Risol ≥ 3 Rgr, where Risol is the distance from the center of the circle to the nearest
nonmember galaxy within 0.5 mag of the faintest group member
Compactness: μgr < μlimit, where μgr is the mean surface brightness (mag/arcsec2)
within the circle of radius Rgr and μlimit = 24.0 in r band
Magnitude of the brightest galaxy: 16.0 ≤ r ≤ 17.0
This has resulted in 459 candidate compact groups over 6200 sq. degrees, with 260 visible from the
southern emisphere (δ< +20 degrees). The average expected redshift is z ~ 0.2: a spectroscopic follow-up
survey has been completed on the NTT telescope and EMMI detector to identify the bound groups.
The main goal of the spectroscopic follow-up is to look for signs of
evolution in the groups and to classify their galaxy population.
Up to now over 140 groups have been observed.
